Muhammad Ali, a man who truly transcended sports, passed away this week. As I saw the story break on the news, I recalled my one-time “close encounter” with Muhammad Ali. It was March, 1978, and I was in 11th grade. My older brother was home from college for the weekend. It was a Saturday night, and my parents, for what turned out to be the last time ever, gave us money and treated us to a night out. We wound up going to The Roxy Theater in Hollywood (a small intimate night club) to see Kiki Dee. She had a new album and had a hit duet song with Elton John.
It turned out to be one of those amazing Hollywood nights that occurred in the seventies. Elton John showed up and played the entire second set with Kiki Dee. At that time he was playing concerts in 20,000-seat arenas. My brother and I found seats at a small 4-person table that happened to be right next to the manager’s private reserved table. And the manager had some friends visiting that night, sitting right next to us. During the first set, we noticed that Barry Gordy (the head of Motown Records) was one of the people sitting at the manager’s table. Sitting across from him was a blind man wearing sunglasses. Oh, it was Stevie Wonder. Stevie left after the first set, leaving an empty seat at the table. A large man wearing on overcoat squeezed by us and sat down at the empty seat. It was Mohammad Ali, sitting next to us. And at the time, the admission ticket was only $5. It was quite a night,
